do you really believe a space elevator is doable with current materials?

I have read a couple of articles suggesting it was but they were all Scientific American and other layman journals and some of the things they print can be fairly far out there.
As a kid who grew up in Houston in the 60s and 70s I have to admit I am jealous. I still think space exploration should be a bigger priority and I am pissed we don't have a manned space vehicle.
