Agreed, but read the fine print when you switch. Joel Send a noteboard - 30/09/2011 08:21:31 PM
We are with Capital One but I am planning to switch to small local credit union. I would am tired of the bank trying to fleece me with fees. My son had a charge pending on his account so when he checked his balance it said he had money but when he used the card the charged him $35 a transaction. Ended up costing him over $300 to spend less than $30. Now it is his fault he let his account go negative but that should not mean it is open season from the bank to rape him.

I had the exact same thing happen to me when I came over here two summers ago (kinda hard to regularly check accounts from another continent without a cell phone, though heaven knows I tried, and waited a week until they said my next paycheck had arrived before using my debit card.) That was at United Heritage Federal Credit Union (with which you may be familiar; much of their accounts consist of military personnel.) When I protested they did agree to expunge about $150 worth of service charges for things like a pack of cigarettes and bottle of coke, but made very clear that was a one time exception.

In general, however, I do prefer credit unions and small banks to large banks; I tend to look at business the same way you look at government: Small and local is best, because more accountable and less power crazed. With a credit union you are a shareholder, not just an account holder, which can have nice benefits; my moms credit union is forbidden by law to make a profit so, since they regularly have more revenue than expenses, they just as regularly split the excess up among the members.

I love my credit union, so drama free. I would never switch to a bank. *NM* - 01/10/2011 03:04:39 AM 199 Views
Hopefully this means no-one will dare do that here, having seen the reaction. - 30/09/2011 11:11:29 PM 393 Views
You'd think that. - 01/10/2011 01:13:33 AM 565 Views

Maintaining a modest sum of money in checking/savings/CDs obviates this charge and most others - 01/10/2011 02:02:51 AM 443 Views

Right. It's not an issue if the combined total meets BoAs requirement. - 01/10/2011 02:33:15 AM 554 Views
