But come next month, I won't be able to use my Natwest debit card in any cash machines except Natwest's own, because my bank account is too basic. The reason I have such a basic account is that it was all they'd give me when I moved to the UK - these accounts are for people with poor, or no credit histories.
This pisses me off. I'll be voting with my feet as soon as I get my direct debits moved around. Unlike many of the people with these accounts, I have other options now. However, if I didn't, I'd have no cash machine accessible to me within 3 miles. That's a long way for a vulnerable customer - because we all know people in such financial positions don't just get there because they're bad with money, they're often sick or old or disabled in some way. Add onto that the fact that my local corner shop, where I have to go to top up my key operated electricity meter (another of those things often seen in the homes of financially or socially vulnerable people) only takes cash for those topups, not cards - cash I won't have access to nearer than 3 miles if I stay with Natwest.
Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant. I'm angry about this, can you tell? Point being, I can see them doing it in the UK too.

Yeah, do more of what made folks mad enough to pass a federal law and kill your stock price.

Hopefully this means no-one will dare do that here, having seen the reaction.

You'd think that.

Can't believe they're still in business. They are a shame to the human race. *NM*

You mean BoA, not banks in general, right?

Maintaining a modest sum of money in checking/savings/CDs obviates this charge and most others

Hm?

Right. It's not an issue if the combined total meets BoAs requirement.

The bank may have the right to protect itself from losing money

Yes, but griping about pains arising from symptoms does nothing to cure the disease.

As long as account holders indefinitely surrender enough of their money for the bank to invest?

No. I mean BoA doesn't want to have clients who cost money rather than make money for the bank.

Well, charging people $5/month to use their own money will not accomplish that goal.

Sure it will. They'll pay the fees or they'll leave. Either way BoA wins on that front.

I suppose, if turning the departure of account holders into a stampede counts as "winning."

If it's limited to the targeted account holders, the unprofitable ones, then it is winning.

But the targeting is determined by how much money account holders semi-permanently loan banks.
