around here most people I know pay monthly, so I'm not sure how common that really is. A lot of rents are advertised as a weekly rate, especially student housing, but you end up paying them montly anyway. Cheques are finally on the way out thankfully, I've not had anyone absolutely demand I pay them with one for about three years now, but I still receive them - mainly as gifts from people who give me money for birthdays/christmas and as refunds from companies apologising after a fuckup.
