Some people just don't seem to think outside of the box

Like Celia said: If those are the weddings you wanna throw, pay and don't complain.
But I am pretty sure there are many other ways.
Friends of mine for example rented an old castle (which is now a youth hostel) for a whole weekend and around 100 guests. They asked us to wear medieval clothes for the ceremony, but other than that just to be comfortable. They also didn't wish for presents but for money, so the renting of a hundred beds in the hostel wouldn't be as expensive for them. From what I heard most people did this. I have no numbers of what the whole experience cost them, but it certainly wasn't approaching the 3000s. It was also the best 3 day party our circle of friends had ever seen.
Point is: there are ways to make it cheaper, yet more special and unique than what the guests may expect. But if you wanna please every elderly aunt with that is expected of a traditional wedding, well, tough luck.

Well, part of it is that the rehearsal dinner isn't on the $5k budget.

It is avoidable, but people will treat you like you're a nutcase if you don't do most of the things

If I had it to all over again I would have formed a Rock Band and dated supermodels

Everybody I have ever talked to that had a big, expensive wedding has told me that in hindsight...

As someone who had a smaller wedding than was expected by certain people...

Yeah, and that's why Russians are all dying of alcoholism. *NM*

You don't have to be an alcoholic to prefer not to have a cash bar at a party.

It is lame to expect the father of the bride to shell out tens of thousands for a party

If they're not close enough to invite to the reception, are they really needed at the ceremony?

In most cases, a church ceremony tends to be an open thing. Anyone can come.

Apparently it's becoming more common over here to do weddings on a weekday.

I can't imagine someone in America announcing their wedding was on a weekday.

Because if you put tiny plastic musical instruments on all the tables, your ears will bleed out.
