I don't think our entire wedding cost more than $2000, and I still think we paid too much. Looking over that chart, I can see a few obvious places where we were able to save (venue and ceremony site were free, we had an aspiring photographer do the photos for a little over cost in exchange for allowing her to use them in her portfolio, etc.). Even so, I kind of wish we skipped most of it and just had the ceremony with a few close friends and family.
When my parents got engaged, my maternal grandfather offered them $1000 (a fair chunk of change in the 60s) to elope because he knew how expensive weddings could be. My mom made a similar offer to us, but my wife didn't want to offend people by not inviting them to a reception at least. My daughter is 10 now, so I should probably start saving up for a bribe. What do you think is a good amount to offer?

Well, part of it is that the rehearsal dinner isn't on the $5k budget.

It is avoidable, but people will treat you like you're a nutcase if you don't do most of the things

You don't have to be an alcoholic to prefer not to have a cash bar at a party.

It is lame to expect the father of the bride to shell out tens of thousands for a party

In most cases, a church ceremony tends to be an open thing. Anyone can come.

Because if you put tiny plastic musical instruments on all the tables, your ears will bleed out.
