Sorry, imposing democracy was an implausible goal, however often stated, and doubly so when premised on the notion we could do it in under five years.

I don't disagree with that, but your insistence on breaking it down shows that you're completely missing the point. I don't feel like being in a multi-paragraph argument about it. If you want to know what I think, just go back to my first comment. That's the point, and where I stop.

The whole world always knew that, so in the grand scheme of things what a few Marines did on their own is neither here nor there to the credibility of a stated goal with no credibility in the first place. Their behavior was not wrong, but not for that reason; the US has signed treaties prohibiting mocking and profaning the dead like that.
