Honestly I just want to sit down and read an exciting story. Red Mars had a lot of interesting ideas, it just didn't make those ideas into a compelling story. Not compelling enough for my simple tastes, anyway. 
I'm glad you liked it, though, and I'm not trying to say it's a bad book or anything. Just not my style.
