As long as fact checkers do not (also) make up lies out of whole cloth there is no problem, and since their relevance depends on accuracy they have strong incentive not to do that. Anyone caught inventing things would be out of a job instantly (indeed, the few journalists caught doing that in the past decade met precisely that fate.)
