I was trying REALLY hard to avoid putting it in precisely those terms. Joel Send a noteboard - 26/10/2012 10:12:17 PM
I don't believe that Catholic or Orthodox notions of theodicy require one to make such absurd statements or come to such repulsive conclusions. I highly suspect that even Lutheran and Anglican notions on the relationship of God to evil do not require that God intends for children born of rape to be born; indeed, it would almost sound as though God wanted the rape to happen.

Of course, the Onion is just doing what it usually does.

But, yeah; determinism=yuck. The Fall, Abraham agreeing to leave his native land for one to be named later, Jacob agreeing to go back to the family he defrauded and fled, Solomon choosing his blessing; choices, choices, choices. Forty years in the wilderness because the Jews managed to screw up the same choice TWICE. Same with the New Testament; the Passion is all about Christ choosing obedience unto death, just as Christianity is all about choosing to follow Him and accept His sacrifice for the same reason (NOT as a "Get out of Hell Free" card.)

I wish people did not gloss over the "those He foreknew" part immediately before "He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son," because it makes all the difference between omniscient anticipation of and provision for free choices rather than DICTATING all "choices." And prevents implying God causes rape.
