If your candidate isn't Bill Clinton and the opponent isn't Bob bloody Dole you won't win an election where only half the people turn up to vote. The "we won't win unless we proactively attempt to get people out and vote in a systematic and organised way" lesson has won Obama 2 elections. If the Dems had campaigned the way the Republican party has then Mitt Romney would be President right now.
certainly the dems got their voters out more successfully than the republicans did this time around, but i think that was more due to the double whammy of romney having such right wing ideas and the closeness of the election after the first debate. i would not count on the same number and makeup of voters in every cycle, especially if the GOP actually learns from their mistakes. right now it does not look like they will for at least a couple of years, but all it takes is one more big loss for the current crop of republican strategists to realize they have to change or die.
