I took it as a literal statement, the language implied as much to me...

If you didn't mean it that way it's fine but while I've a great deal of respect for Tom and absolutely acknowledge his mastery on several subjects but not on this one anymore than on physics.
Normally I'd agree about the head-in-sand part but I generally am the person who specifically does the reverse, I tend to be the default Devil's Advocate. The bias is still there, it's unavoidable, but in my experience the GOP party officials - not the pundits or the 'minions' - tend to be very pessimistic sorts who go with Murphy's Law... a lot of the Dem Chairs tend to be the same though maybe a bit less, hard to say, or hard for me to say anyway. These are fairly invisible people though, as an example, do you know who your Dem or GOP Chairmen is? State or County? Damn few do. In any event whenever I read news or punditry on stuff I've had a hand in I always raise an eyebrow and wonder what game they were watching and one of my friends on the left who is in a similar state does the same. I think we're right on this... journalists are lazy and pundits are more interested in collection of speaking fees.
I'm not sure, I personally want to avoid even studying the stuff for a month or two, cooler heads and all. My gut says the GOP is still hunting around for a real position besides anti-liberal and we need to find that and sell it to Joe.
I'd get into the fact being directly involved in the party probably involves an aspect of "head in the sand" that an outsider looking in doesn't but the main point is Tom is a relative authority on the matter and he acknowledges some things need fixing.

I also wasn't criticising the GOP for lack of effort, besides their core is much more motivated and they have much less to gain by heavy campaigning elsewhere than the Dems because the audience you're trying to appeal to isn't as likely to vote for you unless you change some of your stances anyway.

The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.
