i'd say pissing off the single industry that employs pretty much everyone who works for a living in michigan can hardly be described as a great thing.
A few years ago, Toyota wanted to open up a new factory in Michigan. It was going to bring in about two thousand jobs. Then negotiations with the UAW fell through, so they built it in Mississippi (a right to work state) instead.
As others have said, unions had an important place in the history of our nation and our state, but their time has come and gone.
having toyota bring in 2000 jobs isn't going to affect the long-term employment prospects of the rest of the state. and it's not the UAW's fault, it's the reliance on a single industry to drive your state's economy. michigan needs to diversify its economy so that a bad year for auto sales doesn't drive unemployment up above 10% and beyond. it's not the UAW that is preventing this from happening, btw...
