That makes more sense. Joel Send a noteboard - 13/02/2013 06:23:36 PM
Some historical Popes were sufficiently pragmatic as to accept entire religious communities into the Catholic fold which agreed to acknowledge their authority, even when said communities did not change various lesser details of their rite, such as the rules on celibacy for priests. And while most of those denominations are very small now, they still exist. A not-so-small example is the Maronite Church in Lebanon.

Similarly, in modern times, there have been instances where married priests of other denominations became Catholics, not by conversion as such, but rather by the Pope's agreement to accept their church or denomination into the Catholic fold. A number of formerly Anglican priests are in that position.

Of course, you could say that they are not "normal" Catholics, and that a "normal" Catholic, i.e. one who does not adhere to any of these special denominations within the larger Catholic fold, cannot be both married and a priest. Yet.

If the denomination is accepted into the Roman Catholic Church, its ordinations and the like logically would be also.

So Roman Catholic priests CAN marry, under tortuous conditions? Interesting.... - 13/02/2013 03:40:48 PM 468 Views
A priest can't marry, but a married person can become a priest. - 13/02/2013 03:51:02 PM 521 Views
Heh, yeah, I guess I slightly mischaracterized what you were saying. - 13/02/2013 05:54:05 PM 616 Views
