As far as I understand it, it is just a matter of the race of the chickens, nothing to do with how they are brought up... You get a slightly more yellow/orange yoke if you allow the hens to eat grass, though.
Over here, at least, they say that you are less likely to get a bad egg if you pick a white one, since they use light to check the eggs before selling them... But I do not know if it is true.
