And I'm asking this from a purely theoretical (and thus compassion-less) place....

Why shouldn't a sickness/hospital stay/medical event cost you financially? Why shouldn't it cost you big if the time/resources required were big? Those drugs, surgical equipment, facilities cost money. Those health care workers (doctors, nurses, support staff) need to be paid. Why shouldn't the individuals who utilized these resources be responsible for (at least some of) the cost?
