I'm fairly neutral on this score, but coming into power in a country currently embroiled in war is not the same thing as perpetuating war. He would really be an unfit candidate if he had pulled out of either w/o attempts at stabilization.
That said, I don't think that rationalization makes it a good idea. It just gives it a pretty reason.
