I got my instructions. I asked if we could transfer him or put him on unpaid leave for punishment. Not an option.


Your boss made the decision and made you give him the bad news when you wanted something less severe?

Inappropriate in my book. The person who does the firing should be the decision maker. Period. Anything else is sloughing off an unpleasant duty onto someone else. That makes it too easy to do. It's cowardly and dishonorable in my book.

Someone who did that to me would probably find my resignation on his desk shortly thereafter.
