Like I said before (sorry to repeat), being late and unprepared was not his only option in his circumstance.
Sick pay and other things could have replaced maternity leave.
It wasn't a question about maternity leave really, it was about the employers responsibility to the employee in terms of welfare.
But what about the employee's responsibility to take advantage of what IS available in terms of welfare? Whether their ego gets in the way or not?
