I would only change the child's name if he was going to be legally adopted. Even with the same surname, the child would still be "only" a step child. I think that would be more confusing than having a different name.


We don't consider him a step at all. Nephew has been calling my brother Daddy for years now (and actually did so on his own volition). My brother considers him his full son.
