The insurance exchanges in the Senate bill will already do that. Joel Send a noteboard - 19/01/2010 02:25:32 AM
Of course, Faux may not be reporting that, what with the more important story about how they may get to dance on all the Kennedys graves.... ;)
having insurance follow you when you leave job. Most republicans support insurance reforms just not as radical as what the dems are putting out there. They don't see the insurance companies as the enemy. Also as mentioned they support tort reform, which the dems oppose because it would hurt trial lawyers.

They don't have complete agreed up on plan but then again neither did the dems until they spent most of the year hashing one out. They still don’t have one they can agree on. Minority parties don't typically put forward complete pieces of legislation.

And COBRA already allows people to take insurance with them for a while after they leave, if at too high a price currently. The proposals floated to "allow" people to continue coverage are driven by an insurance lobby who wanted companies to be able to lock in policy holders so that even if they find a better deal than they've got they can't legally switch. It's not so people can take insurance with them, it's so they can't escape a horrible insurer (I almost said "private insurer" but that's the only kind we have unless you're >65. ) They didn't get that, but they are getting a helluva lot out of this bill; it's the biggest private subsidy since the Agricultural Adjustment Act.

It's a crap bill, but it's the only one the table, which is the only reason the leaders of the "left" insist we have to take it. I was on board with that for a while, willing to stomach a lot of the things I disliked about the bill, until they removed every last one of its benefits except the insurance exchanges. Now it's a net negative (by a large amount) that actually makes the status quo look GOOD by comparison, so I guess, on this bill, I'm a conservative.
