And it really isn't just Americans. It is against human for people to say "forget what is best for do what is best for the masses". There are people who support that that process in theory and there small groups who have actaully bought into it but as species we look at these as how will affect us.
For one thing, it's once again myopic: The lone wolf dies. It's not about being a martyr (not in politics, ever) it's about not cutting off your nose to spite your face and being able to see more than five seconds into the future. I'd love to see people always do the right thing for the right reasons, but that ship sailed long ago.
