Exactly. Unfortunately, in an increasingly fast paced world where instant gratification is the order of the day no one wants to take the long view. Which is how they wake up one morning and realize 25% of their income is going toward making sure that if their kid breaks a bone someone will set it (and why so many are content to run their lives and country on credit. ) We desperately need to alter that mindset, and fast, and the first step is to acknowledge no man is an island.

It's not just some New Agey hippy hogwash: In any community, any system, each failure of any part is detrimental to the effectiveness of the whole. People trying and failing to feed their family don't waste taxpayer money on food stamps: That's an intended remedy for a reality that lowers productivity and military preparedness (it's hard to charge an enemy fortification when you can barely stand. ) Just like the people who say, "Why do I have to pay taxes to educate other peoples kids?" So those kids don't end up unemployable with five kids 'cos no one ever taught them skills, a trade or how to get laid regularly without popping out a kid every few years. When that happens your tax money goes to their food stamps and/or they steal your car (or one of the people they sell crack to sticks a gun in your ribs. ) I don't expect people to do the right thing, but it'd sure be nice if they learned how to do the sensible thing, because they aren't just screwing up their country, they're screwing up mine, too.
