I remain convinced the Republican Party began, at least in terms of national power, as a business venture for which idealistic rhetoric was just a marketing tool. Considering how wildly it succeeded I don't know why they'd change a winning formula. I've never disputed there are sincerely good and deeply committed Republicans among the rank and file; they provide the leadership with cannon fodder as effectively as they did in 1863.
