However, I think it is more prevalent than you think it is. I just think that it erodes the idea of facts when religion takes too close a hand in education (that applies to religious private schools as well, including Catholic schools, though they're far less worrisome than they were in, say, the 1950s).
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
