Get a credit card for purchases. Too many pitfalls if you use a debit card - there's no purchase protection, they place a hold on your available funds even if you don't buy anything (like at a gas station, they'll prace a hold on a much larger amount), and then you get hit with immediate fees. With credit cards, you have a lot more control and 4-weeks' grace period, also purchase protection. And in case of fraud, you aren't liable (whereas with a debit card, the money is gone).
In this instance, contact your credit union. They generally are NOT evil because they are non-for profits. Ask them to reverse the fee.
