Most people do recognize that the war needed to be ended in this way to avoid the entire destruction of the Japanese race (whether in resistance or suicide). Iwo Jima, Okinawa, the kamikazes and other similar examples of the way Japanese soldiers and civilians were thinking prove that only something radical like the atomic bomb could avert even worse slaughter.
I agree with you, and so does the fellow in the article and so do many more.
Most? I'm not sure about 'most'. In my experience an awful lot of people believe that it wasn't necessary. Perhaps they are a minority, but they are a rather loud one.
