Yea, he's going to be adding to it all day, trying to explain the various facets of the bill. Inigo Montoya Send a noteboard - 22/03/2010 03:05:03 PM
You may be right about reform having to start now, too. I'm rather torn on the issue, myself - the bill as passed is not that bad in itself, but it *is* bad, even disastrous, if it's the only bill that's going to be passed for the next five or ten years. So if the polarization and ugliness that this bill has sown is such that Congress waits years before trying to pass additional reforms, I'm afraid it wasn't worth that. As such, I still think a more bipartisan bill should've been possible.

Yea, that's the thing. This bill doesn't do nearly enough on it's own to truly change or save the system financially. But I have to think it makes it a hell of alot easier going foward to make more impactful reforms down the line now that the initial hurdle has been cleared. Especially if it can be explained in terms to the public that the figures (like Klein uses that graph to illustrate) are only a drop in the bucket of our total healthcare spending. When people see that this bill hasn't taken away any "freedom" as the crazy, loud right would have us believe and has given almost everyone access to care when they're sick, I think further reform will be much more palatable to the people down the road. Especially if some of the cost-saving pilot programs included in this bill are actually coming up with real results that can be shown demonstrably to save money.
