As long as people know in advance that their real name is going to be displayed, they have the option not to post on the Blizzard forums.
It is compulsary to play the game. It was brought in as just a login service, 6months later it's to be integrated with facebook, is able to display real names in game (and it's only a matter of time till mods exploit this), and is being forced on people on forums.
There was nothing wrong with the way things were, it is being done for one reason alone. Money.
Blizz in conjunction with Facebook and Microsofts targetted advertising want to further exploit customers by forcing them to reveal private information.
Blizzard demand that people use their real names when posting on their forums (WoW, SC2).

I've heard that other places have been doing this without too much of an issue. iRacing, for one.
