It is compulsary to play the game. It was brought in as just a login service, 6months later it's to be integrated with facebook, is able to display real names in game (and it's only a matter of time till mods exploit this), and is being forced on people on forums.
There was nothing wrong with the way things were, it is being done for one reason alone. Money.
Blizz in conjunction with Facebook and Microsofts targetted advertising want to further exploit customers by forcing them to reveal private information.

It's not like you have to use your real name when you play a Starcraft 2 game on battle.net, you still have a gaming alias for multiplayer.
Yes, you have to sign in to a battle.net account, but they are not forcing you to post on the forums, they're not forcing you to use the facebook feature. These are all voluntary.
Blizzard demand that people use their real names when posting on their forums (WoW, SC2).

I've heard that other places have been doing this without too much of an issue. iRacing, for one.

does something even need to necessarily be against the law to be brought suit against?

Depends on how they implement it.

There are parental controls to keep kids off the forums, if that makes any difference. *NM*
