Even if what you decided to do was good? Your good act is evil just because you did it for your own purposes?
As a way of life. It's an evil philosophy and it doesn't stop being evil just because once in a while you do something good.
Although, obviously it's possible to do good for selfish reasons - self-gratification, gloating rights, trying to impress people, trying to help people because you personally know and care for some of those afflicted, and so on, and I wouldn't consider that evil as such, in fact I expect this is what motivates most good people. But in those cases you're not doing what you want regardless of it being good or evil, you're just choosing to do good because you want to do good, even if it is for selfish reasons.
The first rule of being a ninja is "do no harm". Unless you intend to do harm, then do lots of harm.

It'd be pretty difficult to specifically reward you for being a 'gray' character. (Two games)

That's actually a pretty narrow view of Neutral when it comes to Alignment or Morality.
