What? I've barely had the opportunity to play 4th Edition yet.

I actually really like the core of what 4th Edition is. The thing is very bland and clinical, which I imagine would put off many players, but the rules are very clear and efficient, for the most part. Hell, I think it could use a little more trimming down (I've cut out Armour Class from my version, shunting its responsibilities to Reflex, since they were pretty much the same anyway.) For someone who has been using modified 3/3.5 Edition rules forever (I played 2nd Edition straight, mainly because at that age I barely understood those ridiculous rules enough to play, let alone know how to rework them), I can't understate how much easier 4th Edition is to adapt. 3rd Edition was based around the Class system, which I hated and pretty much restricted any significant attempt at change, but with 4th Edition classes are very easy to change, hell, I could even adapt the system to work without classes (though it would still work on level advancement) with very little difficulty.
As a DM who has always taken an inordinate amount of pleasure from building settings, 4th Edition has been fantastic. The rules are so simple it makes everything easy.
Unfortunately, with all that modding, I've not run a lot of actual games

The first rule of being a ninja is "do no harm". Unless you intend to do harm, then do lots of harm.

4th Edition has been a commercial failure. 5th Edition wasn't originally due for several years yet.

No, the future of D&D has resided with Pathfinder for a while.
