It sucks because they're still catering to the lowest common denominator. They want to make an "HD" stream available to someone with a 5mbit connection. Even today, though, the advertised average broadband connection is faster than that but for home users, actual connection speeds are shit - on the order of single-digit or low-double-digit percentages of what people are actually paying for. If you consider only places with fairly high population density, the average connection is advertised to be MUCH faster than that, but isn't since companies and municipalities have de facto monopoly agreements. As the advertised connection speeds increase, so will the supposed quality of the offered streams. The nice thing is that there's no effective technological upper limit on the attainable internet speeds - only companies' profit/loss ratio of upgrading their servies, but there is an upper limit on quality.
Fixed that for you. Can you tell I'm bitter about my service? I live in a major metro area suburb and pay Comcast $55/month for 16Mbit service with SpeedBoost to 20Mbit. I don't think I've ever seen higher than 2Mbit actual down regardless of the day/time. Even using Google Documents for a word processor or spreadsheet is a goddamn pain in the ass: it's slow, unresponsive, and extremely limited in features. "Cloud" services I'd be interested in such as Netflix Play Instantly, fails to appeal since it features so few titles I'd actually want to watch.
In general, I find such technological apologism to be fundamentally flawed when viewed against examples of real-world implementation. You can call that part of the transition effect disruption, but I'm more inclined to believe such restrictions and limitations will continue even after the transition to centralized computing is complete.
