By tightly controlling the game, access to the game, and all it's functionality, they:

1. Are better positioned to advertise and sell DLC.
2. Can do stuff like the real-money auction house, which will make them oodles of cash by taking a cut of items that, traditionally, someone could have just cheated their way into in a single player game if they really wanted.

Stopping "piracy" and the used game market is just gravy - the used game market hasn't really existed for awhile in the PC space anyways.
