If you posted about the brilliance of Robert Jordan's writing style I'd have to reassess that conclusion.

I'm well aware that some will even attack Tolkien as being substandard, but I personally find his prose compelling, all the more because he so studiously avoided using Latin roots, so his works sound incredibly English.


I believe I did have a few qualms about some of Tolkien's dialogues, mainly due to not being convinced he fully pulled off integrating the hobbits' speech with those around them, but yes, he did manage to achieve quite a few of his rather ambitious linguistic aims there. That being said, with "edits" and all, I think The Children of Húrin might be his best tale, dark as it is and more dependent on the other Silmarillion texts.
