Moderates need a better narrative Tom Send a noteboard - 24/08/2017 05:19:14 AM

I have to say that I think it's useful to go back to Sorel at a point like this. People need a myth to synthesize disparate ideas into a coherent narrative about reality in order to truly move mountains. The far Left has its victim narrative - the patriarchy, the cisnormativity, white supremacy, etc. are all conspiring against the oppressed. Now Trump has a different narrative - make America great again. While I understand that many don't think there's a coherent narrative, it is internally consistent in its tone and its underlying belief structure.

Moderates don't have a good narrative right now. Globalism makes sense in a statistical way, but try convincing people in Ohio that it wasn't the reason their factories closed and they're all on heroin. Trusting the system doesn't ring true, either, because dysfunctionality in Washington has reached epic proportions. Moderates need a myth, and fast.

I realize that many moderates won't even like the idea of validating Sorel, but regardless of his political persuasion he has a point.

Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

– Procopius
