I'm sure you're aware some historians believe slave referred to the British Navy's practice of forced impressment into service of captives. Or to the captured American slaves who were conscripted into the British Colonial Marines. Plus that verse was excluded from the Military Service version commissioned by Woodrow Wilson.
Jeo was saying the song has no controversy...you can make the argument in dozens of way whether the song is controversial or not. But to flat out pronounce and state that the song is not controversial is the controversy.
It is like a patriarchal argument vs a person arguing societal should be less patriarchal...note I am saying this I am not really referring to men run society...(I just can't think of a better word right now it is on the tip of my tongue but it always comes out wrong)...it is arguing from a position of dominance and say you shall like society just because I say so, and I say you will like it, like some from of Orwellian control of language (this is closer to what I am trying to say but Orwellian is not correct, nor is Patriarchy...grr at myself and my brain.)

I am not getting involved in the various merits of the debate...this debate...is literally is the narcissism of small differences...and even though I do not want to get involved...
well the arrogance of how I read (aka how I projected) the eight or so sentences Jeo wrote. Well I felt the impulsive urge to bomb throw not to cause controversy but to point out the perfect history he describes of the flag being apolitical is a historical fabrication and that there has been historical controversy tied to this for at least 5 generations.
And 5 generations ago the thing was not apolitical, nope...5 generations ago the historical memory was already gone of what was original intent...why was the historical intent gone, for history did not leave a clear record and people inserted controversy not out of bomb throwing but because there was a legitimate difference of opinion, and opinion often becomes political when one side wants to shape the culture and another side disagrees

So my point is there is no point that is mono simplistic but there has been a heterodoxy amount of opinions on this for a persons living memory. And I include you old far Mookie, the flag and the specific song we call the national anthem has been political, and if you did not realize it, well that opinion too is political.
