I saw a statistic somewhere in an article about the controversy...

which said 80 percent of NFL players is black. Which is a lot more than I would've guessed based on my extremely limited exposure to it (basically, having seen precisely two games (Super Bowls) and read the odd Wikipedia or media article here and there).
View original postYes. This stuff was hugely unpopular last year when it was just a couple of guys doing it. I really think the NFL shot themselves in the foot here, and Trump is on the side that will eventually win out.
It's certainly remarkable how different the reactions from the owners are now compared to what we saw then. But if that above statistic about the players is true, one would guess that it's because things reached a point where owners taking Trump's side would be almost at war with most of their team. It would also mean that American football has a rather bigger gap between players and fans in terms of background than the other major sports, or does it just seem that way?
View original postAmerican football isn't destined to be the most popular sport in the US. Tastes change. I believe most of the popular support for the kneelers is among folks who don't really like football and won't start liking it, either. The opinions of their fans should be vastly more important to them than the opinions of the American people at large.
But they can't afford to ignore the opinions of their players, either. At best they can try to guide them into a more conciliatory direction, like the Dallas Cowboys thing.
I don't care if Trump deputizes the Klan or outlaws Spanish; Rocket Man is worth it.
