The problem with saying this is just Trump being stupid is that it requires a remarkable coincidence of his stupidity with the very real actions of Russian intelligence, under Putin.

I believe it was stupidity. I believe the Trump campaign stupidly asked Russia for help, because it was run by a bunch of hacks who didn't even know this was illegal. I believe they stupidly took meetings at the highest levels, thinking that they would lose anyway, but this way they keep their Russian friends happy.

I do not believe Trump saw himself as a manchurian candidate who would become President and do Russia's bidding. I think he saw the candidacy as a way to enrich himself, and appease his Russian debt owners. Then he won, and now he's caught in the thick of it.
