I believe the point was, they hated him when he ran for President, but changed their minds when his feud with Trump started.

And "the media" is not simply a buzzword/phrase for the NYT and WaPo. Rather it includes those two and all other sources favored by college educated coastal city dwellers. Not those that pander to wealthy middle aged and elderly white males nor those who's appeal is designed for rednecks and other rural deplorables.
