I guess given the relative populations, giving the colonies a remotely reasonable number MPs would've meant giving them real power, which indeed was never going to happen.

I'm sure they were, just maybe not in the British Empire yet.
Based on a quick check, Kolkata was the only one of those three that was under British control in 1776, and technically it was the East India Company rather than the crown, so perhaps that's why they don't count it? But yeah, it had over 120 000 inhabitants by then, so definitely far larger than any British-owned city other than London.
