The issue is the wall.
Jeo is 100% correct. Democrats and Republicans have been giving lip service to border security as a component of comprehensive immigration reform for decades while just as consistently punting it to the next Administration. Well, this Administration has finally taken action and proposed a wall. Got a better alternative?
The wall will not solve the problem of the people already here, nor will it prevent further crossings for there are many ways to get into America and crossing the border via illegal smuggling is not the main method. (Furthermore a wall will not stop illegal smuggling via crossing the border.)
No in my belief "the wall" is not about actually preventing illegal immmigration, nor removing illegal immigration that already occured (in fact the total peak of the amount of illegal aliens in the US occured about 2008.)

No I agree with Noah Smith.
Trump's wall is bad not because it'll be effective at keeping people out, but because the whole policy is just a way of telling nonwhite Americans that they aren't real Americans.

Now of course it is much more complicated than this, for some people who are for the wall are for it for other reasons. But many people are for it merely for it "makes them feel good" even though it will not change anything really besides changing their own emotions and spending a whole lot of money.
5 billion dollars is a lot of money. If we put an arbitrary number of a person costing 200,000 a year to employ (it is several figures less) that is 25,000 employees for a year a service. Can this money be better spent in another way? How about 25,000 more immigration judges to do deportations?
See Mookie I already proposed a better alternative and I am a "nobody" why can't this president and his thousands of people who work for him propose a better alternative?
Why was the Bush 43 quote again? “I fear that the soft bigotry of low expectations is returning..." well that applies to both the Trump Republican party, and to a lesser extent also the Democratic party.
