We could abandon the West Coast and ensure nobody dies when the Big One hits. Or we could live our lives accepting that certain natural disasters are inevitable virtually everywhere and that the appropriate response when one hits is to offer aid instead of sneering.

Well, just look at the bang up job with aid that's been done that past few years and tell me it makes sense to live in low lying areas and keep hoping the government will do the right thing when disaster strikes.
And yes, the Big one will happen sometime, but it's not a repeated phenomenon, and there's certainly no guarantee it'll happen in our lifetimes. I don't see how that's comparable to hurricanes, sorry.
Have y'all seen this? Qatar is air conditioning their open-air markets and stadiums.
