Bornhald and Valda followed Logain's train and did in fact camp outside the city for months in the books.

My issue is more with Valda getting away with killing so many Aes Sedai, and being stupid enough to dare Egwene to channel. Him being in sight of Tar Valon is actually from the books, though the timeline is off.
