Yes, I'm pretty sure everyone does remember. Legolas Send a noteboard - 21/08/2022 07:44:30 PM

View original postSuddenly she's a hero, because coasting to a win in a small state on paternal name recognition, then pandering to the media by running a reelection campaign trashing the guy who got 69% of the vote less than two years ago, is in no way an example of rising above one's level of competence.

Incumbents coast to reelection in most races - unless they are a Republican with a backbone, because that's the biggest turnoff for Republican primary voters nowadays. Cheney did rise quickly in the Republican House hierarchy before Trump happened though - which, whatever else you may think about that, does show firstly that she's a talented politician irrespective of her last name (name recognition may help you get media and voter attention in primaries, but it doesn't get you any positions voted on by members of Congress), and secondly that she had a lot to lose by refusing to kowtow to Trump.

I think liberals and the left-wing media have made it pretty clear that they haven't forgotten about Cheney's conservatism in general, nor about the thing with her sister specifically. Nobody is saying they love everything about her - but in a party where nearly everybody else has thrown their principles out of the window and fallen over themselves to lick Trump's heels so blatantly, I guess someone who hasn't does stand out, yes.

View original postNow, it seems the latest thing is that her opponent said she hadn't received a concession call from Cheney. The headlines are all spouting that Cheney has released a recording proving this. The recording begins, "Hi, this is Liz Cheney. It's 8:13 PM..." A fucking recording. Setting aside that for anything important, anything where a show of respect (which is the point of a concession call - I think it's pretty safe to say that no one actually cares what a Cheney has to say about anything) is important, no one considers a voice mail to be an acceptable level of effort, there is the point that proving you have left a message does NOT disprove the contention that the other party never heard it.

Who cares? Her opponent is just another Trump bot who intends to build a career on pretending not to have a single original thought in her head, whether or not she actually does (so far, my impression is that MTG is the only one who actually IS that clueless, rather than just pretending to be for political gain, but I could be wrong, it's hard to tell).
View original postBut that is the level of insanity, that simply by denouncing Donald Trump these days, you have certain segments of society on your side, who will make efforts to defend you and go out of their way to promulgate your narrative. How is that any better than being a part of his cult of personality? I certainly have never heard of her opponent, and honestly, cannot at this moment, recall the name of the likely new US Representative from Wyoming.

I certainly agree that it's insane that she stands out as much as she does among Republicans in the House, considering the extremely low bar she has cleared. But sadly she does, so she gets the media attention that goes with it.
