It doesn't often happen that I'm even more cynical than you
but this is one case where I do actually see malice and not mere incompetence or carelessness. On the part of the company, obviously, not the individual employees. The helpful people are the ones doing their job wrong, as far as their employer is concerned... I particularly loathe the designers of the infernal chatbots one has to wade through to talk to a person, which are obviously designed to frustrate the caller so badly that they give up. A special Circle of Hell should be reserved for them.
