Caitlin Clark becomes the career points leader for NCAA women's basketball damookster Send a noteboard - 04/03/2024 11:24:12 PM

Now why did I add "women's" to my subject line when the headline this week is that she passed Pete Maravich?

Because Pete Maravich didn't play NCAA women's basketball. He played men's ball. Caitlin Clark is an incredible player, and what she has done is a great accomplishment. But it's ridiculous to claim what she did puts her on top of both the women's and men's scoring leaders. LeBron James became the first NBA player to score over 40,000 points this week. If Caitlin Clark plays for over 20 years in the WNBA and scores more, did she surpass LeBron?

When Maravich played, college athletes had only 3 years of eligibility and there was no 3 point shot. Whereas Clark is in her 4th year and all have been played with the 3 point shot in effect. Even if they were both men or both women, it's apples to oranges.

It does not diminish Caitlin Clark to view her accomplishments within the perspective of the women's game. As they should be viewed.
