But it's still noteworthy that no present-day man has yet surpassed Maravich, yet she has. Legolas Send a noteboard - 06/03/2024 12:42:53 AM

View original postObviously, what annoys me about it is the virtue signaling component. Even a decade ago, the headlines would not have hailed Clark as the NCAA all time scoring leader for both the men's and women's games. They would have lauded her for what she actually accomplished.

I like that female athletes get far more attention nowadays, and that you get things like the Ionescu-Curry three pointer duel recently (as you can tell, I'm pretty clueless about the NCAA or any college sports really, much more familiar with the NBA and WNBA).

I did just look up the NBAA stats and I see a guy called Antoine Davis came within 3 points of Maravich's record last year before ending his college career - that's gotta hurt. Played way more games though - Maravich's PPG average is insane and indeed unlikely to ever be equalled or bettered...

I haven't seen the headlines you refer to, but it is actually news, surely, that Maravich's record has been beaten after so long, especially after Davis already came so close but failed last year? Comparing Clark to Maravich is apples and oranges, but so was comparing Davis to him as I dare say plenty of people must've been doing last year...

View original postOn a related point, in a recent poll that asked, who would win if Caitlin Clark and Ben Simmons played 1 on 1 against each other, 75% chose Clark. This is so ridiculous, there are no words with which to comment.

Who even cares about 1v1 when comparing players in a team sport? But yeah, while women may be able to beat men on specific points such as accuracy of 3-point shooting, their lesser average size and strength will still mean they won't generally win many matches against men of a comparable talent level.

True, it's apples and oranges - but aren't most sports statistics then? - 05/03/2024 05:41:18 PM 40 Views
