Re: I object to outdated usage of proton counts as well Isaac Send a noteboard - 01/12/2010 01:56:19 AM
Although I tend to agree, I must say that increasing the size of the known universe does not necessarily demand an increase in the total number of protons. The universe is, after all, primarily composed of empty space. Besides, it is still possible that objects and phenomena at the extreme ranges of our perception may actually be comprised of anti-protons instead.

Not exactly, when we reference 'expanding universe' we actually mean two different types of expansion. The Observable Universe os actually just a normal sphere some 90 billion light years across centered on Earth, this is expanding, Hubble and all, but we can only see as far as time allows... this would tend to make people think a sphere around Earth some 13.7 billion light years in radius but it's bigger than that since the observable radius is the distance that light could cover in that time, the objects moving away from each other and all. Common misconception, yes, the Universe, observable and otherwise is expanding, but totally seperate from that, the distance we can see is expanding, so a galaxy currently right outside the observable universe would eventually become visible too. It is possible there is nothing beyond the visible but this requires an violation of the Copernican Principle so that the Earth really is the center of the Universe in 3-space, obviously fairly unlikely, but more over, recent models put the actual Universe's size, in relation to the Observable Universe, at many times large, as much as 10^23 times larger.

I also feel obliged to point out that 136x2^256 might be better utilized for play purposes as a constant, which I shall name "COIN" where 1 coin is equal to approximately 0.001x136x2^256, and thus for game play purposes we would have 1000 of these "COINs" :P

That would work too, except that the whole point was to mix things up a little. :P

Truem but if you start working with anything more than 5-10 digits the ones after that are basically meaningless, people will just bet in scientific notation, and I'd guess the significant digits won't exceed telephone number length, like all 1.234567x10^big and such, might as well shave off the x10^big, I'm in regardless but in terms of boat rocking you'd almost be better off placing bids in hexidecimal or using low millions or something, IMHO

I think it will be interesting to see what effect, if any, this will have on the betting.

Probably a painfully large spreadsheet on your behalf and confusion over used notation, I'd advise letting people use E# calculator style for base ten, like a 5,000,000= 5E6 or 6,789,000,000 equal 6.789E9 and such

But yeah, I'm in
