The non-local accent isn't that strange. Scots tend to hang onto their accents far more than other races. It's to do with our belligerent national pride. My wife has an aunt who has been in the USA for 22years, with an American husband and american kids and her Scots accent is broader than many I meet walking down the street here.
I believe it's especially true of Scots in England that they hang on even moreso.
